Axford just misses on perfect Oscars night

Axford just misses on perfect Oscars night

A fair warning for those planning on having a prediction pool for next year's Academy Awards: Don't invite John Axford, because he'll win.

An avid movie buff and a former film major at the University of Notre Dame, Axford has been making his predictions for the Oscars public since 2010 and was almost perfect Sunday night.

The Milwaukee Brewers' closer went 14 of 15 in his predictions, only missing out on best director, as Axford took Steven Spielberg for "Lincoln" when Ang Lee for "Life of Pi" won the award. Lee was Axford's fourth choice in the category, behind Spielberg and two directors that weren't even nominated.

Spielberg was heavily favored in the category, but even the upset that cost him a perfect night didn't leave Axford feeling down.

"Hi Oscars... I'm John Axford... And I just dominated you! 14 out of 15!" Axford tweeted Sunday night.

Axford went 11 for 13 in 2011 and 11 for 15 in last year's predictions. Who knows, maybe 2014 is the year he runs the table.
