Aviles out for extended period
CLEVELAND -- Mike Aviles will be out for an undetermined period due to concussion-related symptoms. Aviles hit his head on the turf in right field during the first inning of Monday's game against the Tigers and came out in the fourth after saying he was nauseous.
Due to the expanded rosters, Aviles does not have to be placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list but he will go through the protocol before being cleared to return to play.
"He's still a little foggy. He's been coming into the ballpark getting checked and we've actually been sending him home. Depending on how he feels today will be how long he stays," manager Terry Francona said of Aviles.
MURPHY UPDATE: In his first rehab game, David Murphy was 1 for 3 including a two-run homer in Columbus 9-4 win over Durham last night in Game 1 of their International League semifinal series. Murphy, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 10 due to a strained oblique, will play seven innings tonight.
"Murph checked in with the training staff and me, and he said he was pretty good," Francona said. "Murph's so easy to...we talked to him before he went out, so we'll just continue to visit with him and see what to do."
THEY KNOW HIM TOO WELL: Detroit's Victor Martinez was named the American League Player of the Month for August after batting .350 with six home runs and 30 RBI while striking out only seven times.
The former Indians catcher is 6 for 11 with a home run in this series and for the year against the Indians is 19 for 56 with five home runs and 10 RBI.
"Victor goes through periods where it looks like he is playing softball. He swings as hard as he can and he rarely misses. That's not a good feeling," Francona said. " "He took a swing the first night here. He swung so hard that he missed and he looked perplex. He takes good swings all night and it's the rare at-bat where you see him not do that. He keeps it looked in for so long that it is hard. He's that good."
