ASU women top Idaho State, win fifth straight
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Promise Amukamara (15 points) and Haley Videckis (11 points) each posted career-best scoring efforts Sunday to lead the Arizona State women's basketball team past Idaho State 60-53.
The Sun Devils improved to 8-4 on the season in their final game in the nonconference portion of their schedule. The Bengals dropped to 6-5.
Adrianne Thomas added 10 points while Jada Blackwell tied her career high with a team-high eight rebounds to help ASU win its fifth straight game.
Videckis' second 3-pointer of the game with 4:33 left broke a 46-46 tie and started a 14-7 run by the Sun Devils to end the game.
Videckis would clinch the win after a steal and 3-point play gave ASU a 59-49 lead with 1:36 left.
Ashleigh Vella led Idaho State offensively, recording 15 points before fouling out. Jessa Jeppsen added 10 points, while leading scorer Lindsey Reed was limited to just five points.
ASU shot 47 percent for the game while limiting Idaho State to only 33 percent. However, the Sun Devils, who came into Sunday's contest No. 4 in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (.709), had an uncharacteristically dismal performance from the charity stripe, making only 14 of 31 free throws (.452).
Down by as many as 13 in the second half, the Bengals used a 20-7 run to pull even before Videckis started ASU's late scoring burst.
After trailing early in the game, ASU increased its defensive pressure and held Idaho State scoreless for 4:20, to take a 13-7 lead.
The Sun Devils closed the first half with a 13-2 run, to take a 31-20 lead into the locker room. ASU limited Idaho State to just 26.1 percent shooting in the first half, while the Devils shot a 50 percent clip.
Eight Sun Devils scored in the first half, led by Amukamara, who had 10 points.
The Sun Devils open Pac-12 play next weekend when they head to the Upper Northwest to take on Washington on Friday and Washington State on Sunday.
