ASU women nab 3 seed, to host opening round

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The ninth-ranked Arizona State women's basketball team earned a No. 3 seed in the Greensboro Regional, will open the NCAA Tournament against No. 14 seed Ohio, and is one of 16 host sites for this weekend's first and second rounds it was announced on Monday.

The No. 3 seed matches the highest placement in school history for the Sun Devils; the 2006-07 squad also earned a No. 3 seed in the Greensboro Regional.

ASU (27-5) will face Ohio (27-4) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.

Also coming to Tempe this weekend will be the No. 6 seed, Texas A&M (23-9), and the No. 11 seed, Alabama-Little Rock (28-4). The game between the Aggies and the Trojans will precede ASU's game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The winners from Saturday's games will meet on Monday, March 23, at Wells Fargo Arena (time TBD) for a berth in the Sweet 16.

Tickets are now on sale online at sundeviltickets.com. Beginning Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. tickets will also be available for purchase in person or over the phone by contacting the Sun Devil Ticket Office at 480-727-0000 (open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m).

Arizona State will be making its 13th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament, its 10th under head coach Charli Turner Thorne.

UConn's quest for a third straight national championship begins at home.

The Huskies are the top overall seed in the women's NCAA Tournament and Monday night were placed in the Albany Region. They also are seeking their 10th overall title which would tie Geno Auriemma with UCLA men's coach John Wooden for most all-time.

UConn will open up against St. Francis, Brooklyn, which is making its first tournament appearance. The Terriers (15-18) are the 10th team to enter the NCAAs with a losing record.

The Huskies will play on their campus in the first two rounds.

The 64-team tournament begins Friday with the national championship game Tuesday April 7 in Tampa. This season the women's tournament moved its games up one day in the first two rounds and the regionals.
