ASU volleyball downs Washington State
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Behind 25 kills by Macey Gardner, the Arizona State volleyball team outlasted Washington State 3-1 on Friday night, winning by set scores of 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23.
The Sun Devils improved to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in Pac-12 play with the win. Washington State dropped to 10-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference.
Gardner's kill total was just three shy of her career high, and ASU's Erica Wilson added 19 kills of her own Allison Palmer had 52 assists and 13 assists for her fifth double-double of the year.
Washington State was led offensively by Jaicee Harris and Rachel Todorovich, who had 15 and 13 kills, respectively.
The match opened with the two teams going back and forth early. But led by Nora Tuioti-Mariner, the Sun Devils went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 lead, and they never lost that advantage over the Cougars. Wilson recorded a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage, connecting on four kills. The Devils closed out the opening set with a kill by Gardner to put away Washington State 25-18.
The Cougars got out to an early lead in the second set, going up by as many as nine points at one point in the frame. While Gardner recorded seven of her total 25 kills in the session, Wazzu ended the second set on top 25-20.
Gardner and Wilson took over in the third set for ASU. By the end of the period, the duo had accounted for 31 of the Sun Devils’ 42 kills. After going on a 4-0 run midway through the set, the momentum swung in ASU’s favor, and the Devils held on for a 25-21 set victory.
The crowd of 833 got behind ASU heading into the fourth set, and looking for their first win of the Pac-12 season, the Devils took care of business. Wilson finished things off with a kill to end the set 25-23 and give ASU the win.
