ASU suspends Abreu after sexual misconduct charge
Arizona State football player Ramon Abreu was suspended by the team Sunday after being charged with felony sexual conduct with a minor.
Abreu, a redshirt freshman safety, was arrested last week. Police said the alleged relationship occurred when Abreu was a senior at Marco de Niza High School in Tempe. At the time, Abreu was 18 and the girl was a 14-year-old freshman.
Police said the relationship was consensual, but the victim's mother reported it to police and charges were filed.
ASU said it was not aware of the incident when Abreu signed his letter of intent.
The Arizona State athletic department confirmed to the school's newspaper, The State Press, that Abreu has been suspended from the football program.
As a senior at Marcos de Niza, Abreu played on both sides of the ball and was rated by Scout as a three-star recruit, the fourth-best safety in the state (63rd nationally) and the No. 11 recruit overall in Arizona.
