ASU softball musters little offense in loss to Utah
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Bella Secaira hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning, Anissa Urtez sparked a four-run fifth inning when she led off with a solo home run and the visiting Utah Utes defeated the No. 23 Arizona State Sun Devils softball team 8-1 on Saturday night at Farrington Stadium.
Sierra Rodriguez led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice in for the Sun Devils, but that would be the only hit for ASU (30-17, 8-8) until Amber Freeman singled to left field to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Sun Devils nearly scored again in their half of the third inning after Utah committed back-to-back errors, but pinch runner Marisa Stankiewicz was thrown out at home.
After Urtez went deep in the fourth, Hannah Flippen and Kate Dickman both doubled, giving Utah a 5-2 lead. Dickman moved to third after Bridget Castro flied out and Kristen Stewart walked two batters later and promptly stole second. Maddy Woodard then knocked both of them in with a hard single up the middle, giving Utah (32-16, 10-10) a 7-1 lead.
Woodard then homered in the top of the seventh inning, giving the game its final score.
Abby Spiel led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, her first extra base hit of the season, but was doubled up at second base to end the game after Elizabeth Caporuscio flied out to center field.
Dale Ryndak took the loss for ASU, moving to 13-8 on the season. Ryndak pitched four innings, giving up three hits and four runs. Alexis Cooper came on in relief after Urtez's home run in the fourth inning, pitching three innings and giving up six hits and four runs.
Katie Donovan went the distance for Utah, only giving up four hits and one run. With the win, Donovan moved to 14-7 on the season.
