ASU softball finishes off sweep of Southern Miss
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State softball team finished a series sweep of Southern Miss with a 5-0 win Sunday at Farrington Stadium.
With the win, ASU improved to 42-7. Southern Miss dropped to 22-28 on the year.
Pitcher Mackenzie Popescue (20-1) got the win in the circle for the Sun Devils, while Samantha Robles (6-13) was tabbed with the loss for the Golden Eagles. It was the second shutout of the weekend for Popescue, who threw a no-hitter -- the third of her career -- in ASU's 8-0 win Friday night.
ASU got on the board in the third inning when shortstop Cheyenne Coyle hit her 10th home run of the year, a two-run shot over the left-field fence that brought in right fielder Bailey Wigness, who had reached on an infield single to start the frame.
Wigness had two hits on the day and had three steals in three attempts, improving her team-best ratio to 12 for 13 on the season.
The Sun Devils tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, the first from third baseman Haley Steele, who led off the inning with a home run down the left-field line. Second baseman Chelsea Gonzales reached on a one-out fielderâs choice and was eventually plated by catcher Katee Aguiree, who recorded her first triple of the year down the right-field line to put ASU up 4-0. The Sun Devils' last run of the game came when Wigness hit a hard RBI single that glanced off of the Southern Miss third baseman's glove.
