ASU outside top 25 in preseason coaches poll

BY foxsports • August 1, 2013

The preseason USA Today coaches poll was released Thursday, and Arizona State did not make the top 25. ASU, 8-5 last season with a win in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, did receive 51 votes in the poll, enough to finish seventh in 'others receiving votes,' or 32nd overall.

Considering the Sun Devils' strong finish and turnaround under coach Todd Graham, their exclusion comes as a bit of a surprise.

While ASU may work its way into the poll, which is based on the votes of 62 FBS head coaches, six of its 2013 opponents already have: No. 4 Stanford, No. 11 Notre Dame, No. 21 UCLA, No. 23 Wisconsin, No. 24 USC and No. 25 Oregon State.

Graham is once again a voter in the poll this year. He was asked to join the list of voting coaches last season after USC's Lane Kiffin relinquished his vote.

"It was an honor for them to ask me," Graham said at the time. "It's something I take great responsibility in. It's something I think is really important, the integrity of that poll."

ASU will have a chance to prove itself to the voting coaches early in the year thanks to a daunting early-season schedule. After opening against Sacramento State, ASU plays Wisconsin, Stanford (in Palo Alto), Notre Dame (at Cowboy Stadium) and USC.
