Astrodome added to National Register of Historic Places
The ongoing saga of the fate of the Astrodome in Houston has taken yet another turn after the iconic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service this week.
While the new title for the worldâs first multipurpose domed stadium isnât along enough to prevent it from being demolished, it does give groups who want to preserve the Astrodome a bit of hope.
Despite being mostly an honorary designation, it does mean any effort to repurpose the Astrodome can be eligible for federal and state tax credits as well as other economic incentives.
Funding would have to come from a private party, however, due to local voters in November rejecting a proposed $217 million bond issue to redevelop the stadium into a convention and event center.
Currently, county commissioners have no timetable for deciding the ultimate fate of the Astrodome as there are still no private groups coming forward with the funding needed to save the now official historic building.
