Arizona softball sweeps two from Utah
TUCSON, Ariz. – Brigette Del Ponte had four hits, including two home runs, and drove in five as the 13th-ranked Arizona softball team swept a double-header from Utah on Tuesday by scores of 8-0 and 3-1. The Wildcats improved to 27-10 overall and 6-5 in the Pac-12, while Utah fell to 23-14 and 0-8.
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Wednesday at noon.
Game 1: Arizona 8, Utah 0 (6 innings)
Kenzie Fowler (11-3) pitched a two-hitter and Del Ponte drove in four as Arizona earned a mercy-rule victory.
Fowler took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but gave up back-to-back one-out singles. She struck out six.
Del Ponte led an 11-hit attack with three hits; Hallie Wilson, Jessica Spigner and Shelby Pendley had two hits apiece.
The Wildcats closed out the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped by Pendley's game-ending home run, her 14th homer of the season.
Game 2: Arizona 3, Utah 1
Del Ponte and Lini Koria hit home runs and Shelby Babcock (14-7) gave up one run on six hits as the Wildcats completed the sweep.
Chalese Fankhauser’s third-inning solo homer was Utah’s only run production of the day.
Koria gave Arizona a 1-0 lead with a home run in the bottom of the second, and Karissa Buchanan brought home a second run on a fielder's choice.
Del Ponte led off the fifth with her 11th home run of the season to round out the scoring.
