Arizona soccer earns draw with Washington
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona women’s soccer team played Washington to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
After Arizona fell behind by two goals early, junior Alexandra Doller scored her sixth goal of the season in the 64th minute to put the Wildcats (7-6-4) on the board. Then, with just 16 seconds remaining in the match, sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez tied it with a shot off a throw-in from teammate Jaden DeGracie.
The Wildcats outshot the Huskies, 22-7, with senior Jazmin Ponce leading Arizona with seven.
“The main thing we talked to the players about is having an edge,”
Arizona coach Tony Amato said. “On Friday, Washington State had energy
and bite in the way they played, and we didn’t match that. We have to
always bring that or we’re not going to be successful. I thought today
we did a better job of that.”
For Washington, Kate Bennet opened the scoring with a goal in the 20th minute. Havana McElvaine followed that up with her second goal of the season to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
Lindsay Elston led Washington in shots with two, including one on goal.
In net, goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded three saves for the Wildcats while Megan Kufield had five saves for the Huskies.
