CHICAGO -- It was a big week for Aaron Gordon. First he committed to Arizona. Then he took home the 2013 McDonald's All-American game MVP.
Arguably the top performer in the practices leading up to the McDonald’s All-American game, Gordon dominated in the game as well, leading the West squad to a 110-99 victory.
Gordon finished with 24 points on 10-for-17 shooting. He also added eight rebounds and a pair of assists in 24 minutes.
“To get here and go through the process of it all, each practice, each shootaround and the scrimmages it means a lot that I could come out and compete with all the best players,” Gordon said following the game.
All of Gordon’s points came in the paint, and he threw down a series of slams in transition. He pointed to the fundamentals when asked about his overall performance.
“I try and focus on the technical parts of basketball like jumping to the ball, being in help side and taking on defense,” Gordon said. "I mean in an all-star game when it’s not so structured, those things help you excel in a game like this.
Scout.com’s No. 1 player Andrew Wiggins led the East squad with 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Wiggins also made his way to the free throw line eight times and connected on seven.
The West squad had five other players in double figures. Bobby Portis scored 12 points, while Jabari Parker, Andrew Harrison, Nigel Williams-Goss and Jarell Martin all chipped in 10.
The East team had four other double-digit scorers. Wayne Selden scored 13 points, Dakari Johnson went for 12 and Julius Randle and Anthony Barber each scored 11.
Andrew Harrison was the only player in the game to go perfect from the field, as he connected on all five of his field goals. He also tossed out four assists. His brother – Aaron – was 3 for 8 from the field and tossed out five assists.
“They are really, really tough guards,” Gordon said about the twins. “They know how to play the game of basketball, and when it comes down to crunch time, you really want them on your side.”
Arizona's other recruit in the game, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, had nine points, two reboudns and two assists for the East while playing 15 minutes. He made 3 of 5 shots from the field and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line.
