AP Source: Friedgen reign reaches apparent end

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- A person familiar with the situation says Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen has been told he won't be back next season, although at this point "nothing is set in stone."

Athletic director Kevin Anderson is asking the 63-year-old coach to retire or accept a buyout, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the talks are still ongoing.

"There is no resolution," the person said late Saturday night.

If Friedgen refuses to retire, Maryland will be forced to pay the coach $2 million for the final year of his contract. Phone and e-mail messages to Friedgen were not immediately returned.

The Terrapins went 8-4 this season and are playing in the Military Bowl on Dec. 29. In bringing Maryland back from a 2-10 season, Friedgen was selected Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year for the second time.

He has a 74-50 record in 10 seasons at his alma mater. This is will be Maryland's seventh bowl bid since his arrival, and it remains unclear whether he will be on the sideline for the Terps' game against East Carolina.
