Americans use record-breaking day to rout Europe
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Matt Grevers set a world record in the 100-meter backstroke Saturday, Missy Franklin broke the American record in the 200 freestyle and the U.S. pulled away from the European All-Stars for a 155-107 victory at the Duel in the Pool.
It was a banner day for the Americans, who broke national records in eight of the first 11 races and clinched their seventh straight win in the event with four races left.
Grevers won the 100 back in 48.92 seconds, breaking Nick Thoman's previous mark of 48.94 set in 2009.
Franklin won the 200 free in 1:52.74, barely holding off Hungary's Katinka Hosszu, who set three U.S. Open records Friday and another Saturday.
Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands tied her own world record in the women's 50 free in 23.24.
