Akron edges past Kent St. 58-54
AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Demetrius Treadwell scored 14 points as Akron clinched a 58-54 win over Kent State on Friday night to close out the regular season at home and secure a No. 4 seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament.
Treadwell shot just 4 of 14 from the floor, but made one of his baskets to snap a 51-51 tie with 2:22 left to play, and Nick Harney followed up with a layup to give the Zips (20-11, 12-6) the advantage they needed.
Kent State's Devareaux Manley hit a 3-pointer to close within one with 27 second left, but the Golden Flashes missed their next three shot attempts and Treadwell knocked down three free throws to ice the game.
Kellon Thomas led Kent State (16-15, 7-11) with 14 points, and Khaliq Spicer came off the bench to add 10. The Golden Flashes shot just 3 of 19 from 3-point range.
