Troy Aikman has been a loyal Tony Romo supporter for several years. The Hall of Fame quarterback and current NFL on FOX analyst is rarely critical of the current Dallas Cowboys signal caller and says Romo is still the right guy for the franchise.
But with Romo turning 33 in April, Aikman said Thursday that it would be a good idea for his former team to start looking for their quarterback of the future, possibly even in this year's NFL Draft.
"I like the way the Packers did it for all those years," Aikman said, answering a question submitted to a Q&A show on NFL.com. "To bring a guy in, essentially every season, whether you draft him in the fourth round, or fifth round, or third round, whatever it might be, I think there's something to be said for that.
"I don't think they need another quarterback, to make that clear, but because of Tony's age, they certainly have to start addressing who the guy is going to be that comes in after him. If there's a guy that they can pick up and maybe develop in the third, fourth round, I think that's a real positive thing for them."
The Cowboys haven't drafted many quarterbacks over the years. Since taking Aikman with the first overall pick in 1989, the Cowboys have selected four QBs: Steve Walsh, a supplemental pick in 1989, Bill Musgrave, a fourth-rounder in 1991, Quincy Carter, a second-rounder in 2001 and Stephen McGee, a fourth-rounder in 2009.
Since 1992, the Green Bay Packers have selected 12 quarterbacks: Ty Detmer (ninth round in 1992), Mark Brunell (fifth round in 1993), Jay Barker (fifth round in 1995), Kyle Wachholtz (seventh round in 1996), Matt Hasselbeck (sixth round in 1998), Aaron Brooks (fourth round in 1999), Craig Nall (fifth round in 2002), Aaron Rodgers (first round in 2005), Ingle Martin (fifth round in 2006), Brian Brohm (second round in 2008), Matt Flynn (seventh round in 2008) and B.J. Coleman (seventh round in 2012).
