Adam Jones to Mike Nugent- 'Do your job'

Published Oct. 13, 2014 10:56 a.m. ET

It seems the fans were not the only ones frustrated by Mike Nugent's miss in the closing moments of the Bengals game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Cornerback Adam Jones reportedly stormed into the locker room with some pointed words for the former Ohio State kicker.

According to reports, Jones shouted "Do your job," and "We work hard to miss (expletive) like that!"

Jones didn't back down in a phone interview with FOX Sports later on.

"What I said was there's no reason we should've lost the game. I expect 'Nuge' to make those kicks," Jones said. "'Nuge' and me have a great relationship. They (in the media) won't be able to do anything to our relationship. But at the end of the day, we all as a team expect him to make those kicks --€” same way he expects me to make plays when it's third-and-2, third-and-4. We all expect each other to make plays. When you don't, you're in the wrong business."

For the record, the Bengals didn't lose the game. It ended in a 37-37 tie. Quarterback Andy Dalton and other players did not put the blame on Nugent after the loss.

Nugent made field goals from 44 and 38 yards in regulation, and made a 42-yarder in overtime. He lined up for a 36-yard kick with two seconds left to win the game, but missed the kick as he pushed it wide right.

"That was the worst ball I've ever hit in my career," Nugent said. "My plant foot was way too far forward. I think there was a little excitement. I was a little too quick."

Everyone, including Jones expected Nugent to make the kick.

"He's a good kicker," Jones said, "so I had the popcorn ready."

The NFL is a tough game, and a rough business that doesn't have much patience for failure.

"I was telling my wife on the ride home, we're all playing for jobs," Jones said. "If you don't win, they go and find another 20 guys besides such and such to make plays. That was my whole thing."
