January 11 - 13, 2011
Tuesday, Jan. 11
Who: N.C. State (11-4 overall, 1-0 ACC) at Boston College (12-4, 2-0)
When: 9:00 p.m.
The dish: Both teams need the win, especially BC being at home. However, N.C. State has just one win over a team ranked among the top 177 of the RPI, so every chance the Wolfpack has against a top 100 team like BC (No. 40), it needs to take advantage of it if the NCAAs are its destination. To do so, the Pack must get a big game from Tracy Smith and to consistently convert from the perimeter. BC must hit the glass and force turnovers.
Forecast: BC, 68-62.
Wednesday, Jan. 12
Who: Georgia Tech (7-7, 0-1) at Clemson (12-4, 1-1)
When: 7:00 p.m.
The dish: Originally slated for Tuesday, this game was moved back a day because of the wintery weather in that region. The Yellow Jackets must keep Clemson from running its offense through the post while the Tigers need to dominate the glass. At home, Clemson should win, but only if it continues learning its new motion offense.
Forecast: Clemson, 73-64.
Who: Maryland (10-5, 0-2) at Wake Forest (7-9, 0-1)
When: 8:00 p.m.
The dish: A loss at Wake would be disastrous for a Maryland team that nearly won at Duke on Sunday night. The Terrapins can't afford a letdown by allowing that game to linger within, or to look ahead at this weekend's game at Villanova. Wake has to play its best game of the year just to be competitive.
Forecast: Maryland, 80-67.
Who: Duke (15-0, 2-0) at Florida State (11-5, 1-1)
When: 9:00 p.m.
The dish: Duke struggled getting good looks against Maryland on Sunday, and FSU is a better and longer defensive team, plus the game will be in a rowdy building. This is Duke's biggest challenge to date given that it's the Devils' first true road game (lay off the UNCG stuff), and Duke is still looking to discover a third consistent scorer. FSU has offensive issues, but it should win the rebounding battle, and any accuracy from the perimeter will be huge. FSU desperately needs this game to become NCAA viable.
Forecast: Duke, 68-65.
Thursday, Jan. 13
Who: Virginia Tech (10-4, 1-1) at North Carolina (11-4, 1-0)
When: 9:00 p.m.
The dish: Both teams have made strides over the last month. Tech continues learning to play without Dorenzo Hudson and a few other injured players, while UNC is getting better every time it takes the floor, even in last Saturday's ugly win at Virginia. The Hokies have won six straight games and UNC has won seven of its last eight contests. UNC's depth, interior and playing at home will be too much for Malcolm Delaney and company.
Forecast: UNC, 75-66.
Record: 118-30 (not including weekend games)
