Coach Bob Stoops indicated at the school's Media Day in early August, Wood had not been around for summer workouts and wasn't expecting him to arrive.
The McAlester News-Capital is reporting Wood will be a walk-on with the Sooners in January.
Wood played quarterback at McAlester and ran for 1,961 yards. He accounted for 44 touchdowns. Wood was expected to play tight end at OU.
"I have to walk on and earn it back," Wood said to the News-Capital.
