BOSTON (AP) Some of the biggest names in Boston Marathon history are backing an effort to put up a statue honoring the first woman to complete the race, who in a fortunate twist is an accomplished sculptor who has been commissioned to create the piece.
The 120th running of the marathon next week marks the 50th anniversary of Roberta ''Bobbi'' Gibb's pioneering run in 1966.
The modest Gibb still runs every day even in her 70s. She says she is a little embarrassed and prefers to think of the statue as a generic woman runner.
The effort is being led by the nonprofit 26.2 Foundation, which is trying to raise money for the project.

Former champs Nina Kuscsik, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Bill Rodgers and Meb Keflezighi are helping out.
