Police in Minnesota say a 14-year-old hockey player has died after collapsing during a hockey game.

In a news release, Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston said the boy was unconscious after collapsing Friday afternoon at the Brainerd Area Civic Center. Police say a paramedic who was at the game immediately responded and tried to help.

McQuiston said the player was flown to a hospital, where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The Brainerd Dispatch reported that boy collapsed during the Battle for the Blue Ox Bantam AA tournament game between Eastview and Wayzata. The tournament has since been canceled.

In an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Wayzata coach Nate Hagemo said his team expresses its condolences to the Eastview team and the player's family.

"It was a really sad situation to witness," Hagemo told the newspaper.

Police did not provide other details, including the boy's name and hometown.
