Seeking to capitalize on the success of the London Olympics, Britain is bidding to bring 36 world and European championships to the U.K. in the next few years.

National governing body UK Sport is using $43 million of lottery money over the next six years as part of its ''Gold Event Series'' campaign to attract top international events.

UK Sport chief executive Liz Nicholl says the program ''is building on the success of London 2012 and supporting the UK's on-going legacy goals.''

London Mayor Boris Johnson submitted a bid Wednesday to host the 2017 Paralympic Athletics World Championships in the Olympic Stadium. The event would be held in July 2017, a month before the stadium hosts the world track and field championships.
