Beatles legend Paul McCartney is set to headline the opening ceremony for London's 2012 Olympic Games, the Daily Mirror reported Thursday.
McCartney, 69, is "up for" leading the July 27 spectacular. But hopes of a reunion with the fellow surviving Beatle, Ringo Starr, were dashed as the drummer is set to be on tour in the US.
McCartney will be joined by some younger British music talent, with fellow legends The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin unlikely to appear, the report said.
London organizers are faced with the unenviable task of following Beijing's spectacular opening ceremony for its 2008 games, which included 2,008 drummers in a lavishly choreographed affair.
