Prosecutors said Tuesday a charge of culpable homicide had been reinstated against a minibus taxi driver over the road accident in which South African Olympic mountain biker Burry Stander was killed in January.
Stander, a popular two-time Olympian, died after colliding with the minibus while out cycling with his wife near his home in Shelley Beach on South Africa's east coast on Jan. 3. He was 25.
The charge against driver Njabulo Nyawose was provisionally withdrawn this month, but had now been put back on the court roll, prosecution spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson said.
Ramkisson said that Nyawose would appear in court on Aug. 21 when other charges could be added, although she did not specify what those charges could be.
Stander competed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, finishing fifth in the cross-country race at last year's London Games. He also was a former junior world champion.
Stander was the second top cyclist to be killed on South Africa's often dangerous roads in recent years. Carla Swart, a U.S. collegiate champion and Commonwealth Games cyclist, died in January 2011 aged 23 when she was hit by a truck while training.
