Olympic gold medalist racks up $5,000 bill playing Pokemon Go in Rio

Pokemon Go hasn't been officially released yet in Brazil, but that didn't keep reigning Olympic all-around gymnastics champion and ace Pokemon trainer Kohei Uchimura from using so much roaming data on his phone playing the game in Rio de Janeiro that he received a phone bill for $4,900. He was fortunately able to get his phone company to knock down the total.

Via KyodoNews.jp:

"Uchimura said he downloaded the app when he touched down in Sao Paulo for pre-Olympic training camp and just like so many around the world, became instantly hooked -- not knowing he didn't have a flat rate for overseas data usage.

When Uchimura checked his bill, he couldn't believe his eyes.

"500,000 yen..." sighed the defending six-time world champion.

Added teammate Kenzo Shirai, "He looked dead at the team meal that day."

Uchimura, though, was ultimately spared of the huge bill after contacting his phone company to explain the situation. In the end, he got away with the daily flat rate of 3,000 yen.

"I really lucked out," Uchimura said."
