Organizers say more than 240,000 people have applied for the 70,000 volunteer positions available at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Applications closed at midnight Wednesday. Organizers will begin interviewing candidates in February and expect to complete the selection process in about a year.

Volunteers will either be specialists who work in areas such as medical services and sports or media operations, while others will carry out tasks such as distributing uniforms and checking tickets.

London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe says he is ''thrilled with the response'' for a ''once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.''
