Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is calling up 2,100 military reserves to provide security for the 2012 London Olympics, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced Monday.

The call-out notices will be issued to reservists and their employers with 60 days notice to help support police and other civil and Olympic authorities, Hammond said in a statement on the MoD website.

The reserves will form part of a deployment of up to 13,500 military personnel at the games.

"Reservists will provide a range of specialist capabilities and expertise while the majority will form part of the support to Olympic venue security operations," the statement read.

There are currently 600 reservists in Afghanistan but the MoD ensured the operation would remain the prime focus for the defense.

"Reservists will continue to be a key contributor to that and other ongoing overseas operations," Hammond added in the statement.

The MoD compared the contribution of reservists and overall defense personnel to that deployed by other nations at Olympic Games in previous years.
