Koudelka wins World Cup season opener in ski jump

KLINGENTHAL, Germany -- Roman Koudelka overcame blustery conditions to claim his first World Cup win at the season-opening individual ski jumping event on Sunday.

Koudelka, who was also the best in Friday's qualification, soared 138.0 meters with his first jump and 139.5 with his second for a total of 276.4 points.

The 25-year-old Czech says, "The whole weekend went very well for me. I feel mentally strong and worked hard in summer."

Stefan Kraft of Austria was second with jumps of 142.0 and 136.0 meters for 274.1 points, while Germany's Andreas Wellinger had 140.0 and 133.5 to finish third with 270.7 points.

Double Olympic champion Kamil Stoch of Poland didn't compete due to injury.
