Italian committee discusses potential 2024 Rome bid with IOC
BANGKOK -- While still hesitant to formally declare a bid, Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malago has discussed a possible Rome candidacy for the 2024 Summer Games with IOC leader Thomas Bach.
CONI says the meeting took place Saturday in Bangkok at an Association of National Olympic Committees assembly.
CONI says Malago informed Bach of his meeting with Italian Premier Matteo Renzi earlier this week.
CONI adds that "concerning a possible bid from Italy for the 2024 Olympics," it is awaiting changes in the candidacy process from Bach's "Olympic Agenda 2020" reform package, which will be put to a vote at a special IOC assembly in Monaco from Dec. 8-9.
Malago also invited Bach to an athletes' mass at St. Peter's Basilica on Dec. 19 with Pope Francis.
