IOC rules out viral testing of Rio's Olympic waters
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) A top official of the International Olympic Committee says it will not be conducting viral tests of Olympic waterways ahead of the 2016 games.
Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi says the IOC will be sticking to World Health Organization guidelines recommending only bacterial testing.
An Associated Press study released last month showed dangerously high levels of disease-causing viruses in all water-related venues. In response to the report, the WHO initially told the AP in two separate emails it would recommend the IOC to pursue viral testing in Rio. But in statement Monday, the organization reversed course and said it would not issue an ''official recommendation'' on viral testing.
Questions about Rio's water pollution dominated the news conference Wednesday following the IOC's coordinating committee meeting in Rio.
