Interpol, IOC to step up sports security measures

BY foxsports • January 30, 2014

PARIS (AP) Interpol says it's agreed with the International Olympic Committee to step up policing at international sports events such as next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The international police agency says the agreement will provide ''enhanced collaboration'' with the IOC on issues such as doping, match-fixing and illegal or irregular sports betting.

The agreement also calls for Interpol to provide additional support to the IOC to ensure the security of international matches and competitions.

In a statement Thursday, IOC President Thomas Bach called Interpol's involvement ''absolutely crucial'' to ensure the protection and security of international sports events.
