Beach volleyball referee Darryl Friesen left Monday night's Olympic quarterfinal between Germany and Brazil because of illness.

About 20 minutes into the match, Friesen was helped down from the referee's platform by the medical staff. He was seen at the venue later sitting up and talking.

Second referee Wang Leijun of China took Friesen's spot on the platform beside the net, and an alternate took over the second referee position.

FIVB spokesman Dominic Clark said it was the fourth Olympics for Friesen, who is from Canada.
