The president of the Rio 2016 Olympic organizing committee has been hospitalized after suffering from heart problems.

Rio's Olympic committee said in a statement Wednesday that Carlos Arthur Nuzman checked himself into a hospital late Tuesday after a routine health exam showed an abnormal heart rhythm.

Detailed exams on Wednesday showed Nuzman's rhythm normalized and he was expected to leave the intensive care unit Thursday. He was likely to be released from the hospital on Friday.

Nuzman led Brazil's bid to host the 2016 Olympics, which will be held in South America for the first time.
