Hamburg residents win first battle in fight for 2024 Germany bid
FRANKFURT, Germany -- Hamburg has won Round One in the 2024 Olympic bidding contest in Germany.
Germany's national Olympic committee says it found more public support from Hamburg residents than from Berlin citizens for a bid.
The committee announced results of a survey Tuesday, in which 64 percent of Hamburg residents support a bid compared to 55 percent in Berlin.
The two cities are competing to become Germany's candidate to host the 2024 Olympics. The German committee will recommend one of the cities on March 21. The results of the poll could influence the recommendation.
The Forsa telephone poll involved 1,500 residents in each city. The margin of error was 2.5 percentage points.
Either city will also hold a referendum on the bid if selected.
Boston and Rome are the only two declared bids so far.
