KOENIGSSEE, Germany -- Four-time world champion Maximilian Arndt led his German teammates to victory in a four-man bobsled race Sunday, one week after receiving hospital treatment following a crash.
Arndt, Kevin Korona, Alexander Roediger and Ben Heber produced the fastest second run to win in a combined time of 1 minute, 37.72 seconds, edging compatriot Nico Walther's team by two hundredths of a second.
Arndt crashed heavily at the previous race in Altenberg, Germany, and was late to Koenigssee as he recovered from a concussion, a cut and bruising.
"The head was OK again, even if I was a little more nervous than usual," Arndt said.
Junior world champion Walther and teammates Andreas Bredau, Marko Huebenbecker and Christian Poser were fastest in the first run but 0.04 seconds slower than Arndt's team in the second.
Latvia's Oskars Melbardis, Daumants Dreiskens, Arvis Vilkaste and Janis Strenga were third, 0.14 seconds back, followed by the German team led by Francesco Friedrich and the Latvian team led by Oskars Kibermanis.
"I love races like this, it was very exciting," Arndt said. "A pity that Francesco made a mistake or it would have been a clean sweep (for Germany)."
Melbardis' team leads the standings on 835 points, ahead of Arndt's on 760 and Alexander Kasjanov's Russian team on 730. Kasjanov was sixth in Koenigssee.
