Wild open training camp without Sydor

The Minnesota Wild began training camp on Friday with one member absent from the ice: assistant coach Darryl Sydor.

Sydor is currently in a treatment center in Malibu, Calif., following last month's arrest for drunken driving with his 12-year-old son in the car. Sydor had a blood alcohol content of 0.30, which was more than four times the legal limit.

"He's involved in the recovery process, and there's a legal process, and we'll just see how things play out," Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher told the Pioneer Press. "He's an employee, and we fully support him in his efforts. Obviously it's a very unfortunate situation.

"At this point, I think we're just seeing how the process plays out and hoping for the best from him. We'll just take it a day at a time."

Sydor voluntarily entered the NHL/NHL Players' Association Substance Abuse/Behavioral Health Program on Aug. 23. The 43-year-old has elected to extend his stay at the facility beyond 30 days, attorney Ryan Pacyga told Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Sydor will have an arraignment on Oct. 12 and could be sentenced to as long as one year in jail.

A two-time Stanley Cup winner, Sydor collected 98 goals, 409 assists and 755 penalty minutes in 18 seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues.
