Ward, Hurricanes shut out Sabres

Cam Ward made 18 saves to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Buffalo Sabres 1-0 on Friday night in their preseason finale.

Patrick Dwyer had the only goal, snapping a wrist shot past Ryan Miller from a sharp angle in the second period. Jordan Staal and Ron Hainsey each had an assist.

Miller made 29 saves for the Sabres.

The Hurricanes finished with a 3-3-0 record in the preseason, winning their final three games. Carolina will open the regular season next Friday at home against Detroit.

Buffalo went 4-2-1 in the preseason, losing three of its last four. The Sabres also begin the season against the Red Wings, traveling to Detroit on Wednesday.
