Victims of disgraced Canada ski coach urge government action
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Two victims of disgraced national ski coach Bertrand Charest joined former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy to demand immediate action from the federal government to combat abuse in sports.
Charest was found guilty in June 2017 of 37 sex-related charges and received a 12-year prison term.
Genevieve Simard and Amelie-Frederique Gagnon spoke at a news conference Friday at the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary.
The former skiers want the federal government to put in place online training regarding mental and physical abuse for sports organizations. They also want independent safety officers to investigate when concerns are raised.
In addition, they say any sports organization receiving government funding must be required to have a safety plan.
