Vancouver Canucks Cut 4 Players in Second Round of Cuts
After one game of preseason hockey, the Vancouver Canucks have decided to send four players to Utica.
Following a 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks, the Vancouver Canucks have decided to cut four more players from their roster.
Left wing Carter Bancks will be headed back for his third season with the Utica Comets. Since turning pro full time in 2010-11, Bancks has only managed to get into two NHL games, both with the Calgary Flames. He’s likely going to be one of those veterans you have around to help out the young kids and a guy you can call up when an injury occurs if needed.
Centre Wacey Hamilton is set for his second season with the Comets. He hasn’t played in NHL action, but will be a another good veteran to have around a Comets roster that projects to be very young this year.
Defenseman Jordan Subban is the most surprising cut of the four, although it’s easy to see why he’s gone so early. Subban had a poor rookie tournament and needed to have a phenomenal showing in camp to stick around. Last night he was paired with Andrey Pedan and obviously wasn’t impressive, despite what Jon Abbott had to say on Twitter after the cuts were announced.
For all the defensive zone frustrations in SJ, I thought Jordan Subban played pretty well. Up to #Canucks D prospect to lead in Utica

Defenseman Ashton Sautner is the final cut of the four. After four good years with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League, the Canucks were lucky to grab this kid as a free agent. He played 50 games with Utica last year and had 11 points, which was a bit lower than I would have hoped for. He should be more adjusted to the pro game this year and produce better numbers. If he can do that, Sautner will be in the discussion for a spot on the Canucks blue line next year.
The next round of cuts likely comes tomorrow following tonight’s game against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
