Tampa Bay Lightning F Ryan Callahan Placed On Injured Reserve

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Tampa Bay Lightning alternate captain Ryan Callahan has been placed on Injured Reserve with a Lower-Body Injury.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have had a rather trying week. In addition to their troubles on the ice, the team has seemed to draw the short end of the stick when it’s come to injuries this season. Every time the team finally gets one of their players back in the lineup, yet another player makes their way to the ever-growing list.

Earlier today, as the Tampa Bay Lightning prepares to take on the St. Louis Blues in their final game of their current three-game road trip, the Lightning and their fans received some rather troubling news.

According to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Bay Lightning Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced Lightning alternate captain Ryan Callahan has been placed on Injured Reserve. In case you’re wondering, this means Callahan is expected to be out a minimum of seven days.

Unless Callahan’s placement on the Injured Reserve list was dated back a bit, this means Lightning fans more than likely won’t see their alternate captain on the ice again until Thursday, December 8th when the Bolts take on the Vancouver Canucks at the Amalie Arena here in the Bolts Nation.

This is definitely not good news for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ryan Callahan has been a versatile asset for the team this season. In addition to his veteran leadership skills and his scoring ability, Callahan has provided a certain grit the team has lacked in the past.

Given the way the team has played as of late, Ryan Callahan’s play style could serve to be the spark the Lightning need to get back on track. Hopefully, one of the other members on the team – maybe even one of the two players the team recalled earlier this afternoon – can fill Callahan’s incredibly large shoes.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Callahan has missed extended play this season. Ryan Callahan started off the season on Injured Reserve thanks to a labral tear in his right hip. This caused Callahan to miss almost the entire first month of play.

Ryan Callahan has played in 15 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning this season. In that amount of time, Cally has brought home two goals and two assists for a total of four points to accompany a plus-2 rating.

While the Lightning could certainly use someone like Callahan in the lineup, the last thing the Bolts need is for him to make a return to the ice before he is fully healed and risk the chance of Cally re-injuring himself and making matters even worse and potentially damaging his NHL career.

The Tampa Bay Lightning is set to do battle with the St. Louis Blues at the Scottrade Center tonight. The Blues are currently on a two-game winning streak and will more than likely be looking to keep momentum on their side in front of their hometown crowd. Hopefully, the Tampa Bay Lightning will have something to say about that.
