Storm knocks out Sunday's Penguins-Capitals game

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:23 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (AP) The NHL has postponed Sunday's game between the Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins because of the severe snowstorm in the Washington area.

The league on Saturday did not announce a makeup date.

This is the latest shuffle to the Capitals schedule. Friday's game against Anaheim had been moved up two hours to 5 p.m before the league postponed it that day. A makeup date is not set for that game, either.

The worst of the blizzard was yet to come. According to the National Weather Service, strong winds and heavy snow were expected to produce ''life-threatening blizzard conditions'' throughout Saturday.

Forecasters also predicted up to a half-inch of ice accumulation in the Carolinas, and potentially serious coastal flooding in the mid-Atlantic.
