Staying in Montreal a priority for Petry

Jeff Petry has not been with the Canadiens for long -- he joined the team in March via a trade on deadline day. But the city has made an impression on both Petry and his wife, and the potential free agent said he would be interested in more time with the Canadiens.

"This team has a good core group, which will play into my decision," Petry told the Canadiens' website. "I’m comfortable in the environment here, and as the younger talent develops, it will only get better. Everything here was first class. Montreal will definitely have strong considerations."

Petry had a bit of an adjustment to make in Montreal, as he had spent the entirety of his NHL career in Edmonton and therefore never played for a winning team before the Canadiens. But the 27-year-old defenseman settled in nicely with the Habs and averaged 22:16 of ice time per game while earning tough assignments.

General manager Marc Bergevin said the team's interest in Petry remains high.

"Jeff Petry is a priority for us," Bergevin told the Canadiens' website. "I’ve watched him closely. I know his strengths and I think he fits perfectly with our team. We’d like to bring him back to Montreal. I think he liked his time here."
