Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt has suspended for three games by the NHL for slew-footing Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien.

Garbutt is considered a repeat offender and will lose $65,854 in salary. He will miss a home game against New Jersey on Saturday and games in Vancouver and Calgary. He is eligible to return Dec. 21 for a game in Edmonton.

The play in question came at 12:17 of the third period of Winnipeg's 5-2 victory in Dallas on Tuesday. Byfuglien was about to beat Garbutt to a loose puck when Garbutt tripped him.

Garbutt was assessed a minor penalty for tripping. The league said the forward was subject to further punishment because he kicked out Byfuglien's skates while using his stick to yank Byfuglien's upper body backward.
