Senators' Gonchar hit in head by puck

Published Dec. 31, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

Ottawa Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar did not play against the Buffalo Sabres after being struck in the head by a puck during warmups.

Senators spokesman Chris Moore said during the first period Saturday night that the 17-year NHL veteran was being held out for precautionary reasons.

Defenseman Brian Lee was pushed into action after coach Paul MacLean indicated earlier in the day that Lee was going to sit.

For Buffalo, center Nathan Gerbe returned after missing 10 games with a concussion. Defenseman T.J. Brennan also played after being called up earlier in the day from AHL Rochester. Brennan was called up after veteran Christian Ehrhoff sustained what the Sabres are calling an upper-body injury in a 3-1 loss at Washington on Friday.
