Reports: Shanahan to become Maple Leafs president
Brendan Shanahan reportedly will leave his post with the NHL's league office to run the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to reports Thursday, Shanahan will resign his position as NHL senior vice president, player safety and hockey operations to become the president of the Maple Leafs.
The Toronto Star, which first reported the news, said Shanahan could make things official Friday.
The Maple Leafs were eliminated from the NHL playoffs Tuesday following a mid-March eight-game losing streak. The Maple Leafs have made one playoff appearance in the past nine seasons.
Shanahan played 21 seasons in the NHL before retiring in November 2009. He joined the NHL as a vice president in December 2009. He succeeded Colin Campbell as the head of NHL player safety after Campbell stepped down in June 2011.
During his NHL career, Shanahan, 45, scored 656 goals and played on three Stanley Cup-winning teams. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and is the only player in NHL history with more than 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in a career.
