The New York Rangers placed Sean Avery on waivers Friday, marking the second time the 31-year-old winger has been offered to other teams this year, the New York Post reported.
NHL teams have until noon Saturday to claim Avery, who was scratched from the lineup in the Rangers' last nine games.
Avery, who last played on Dec. 10 against Buffalo, told the Post Friday he "guarantee(s)" that a club claiming him "won't ever be sorry."
"I have a lot to prove, and I have a lot of game left after not being allowed to play my game for the last four years," the 31-year-old said.
"I guarantee that I'll play my a** off and give everything I have for the team that will give me the chance I wasn't getting (by Rangers coach John Tortorella). That team will be getting a guy who has a lot to prove."
The veteran winger carries a $1.025 million salary cap hit for any team willing to claim him.
He's also had his fair share of problems on and off the ice.
In August, Avery was arrested at his Hollywood Hills home and charged with battery on a police officer. After police received noise complaints due to a loud party at Avery's home, he reportedly pushed a police officer upon his arrival. Avery reportedly also called the cops "fat little pigs" and challenged them to a fight during his arrest. The Los Angeles Police Department reportedly later dropped the charges against him.
In September, Avery claimed Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds called him an anti-gay slur. However, on-ice officials near the play did not hear anything, and Simmonds denied the slur.
In 2005, Avery made headlines when Edmonton Oilers player Georges Laraque of the Edmonton Oilers claimed that Avery called him a monkey during a game. But the incident was never proven, and Avery denied the allegation.
Then, in August, a former teammate, Alexander Frolov, claimed Avery used racial slurs during his time with the Los Angeles Kings.
According to the Post, the Rangers would likely give Avery permission to strike a deal to play in the Russian-based KHL rather than re-assign him to the AHL Connecticut Whale if no NHL team claims him off waivers.
Avery scored three goals and had a plus-two rating in 15 games for the Rangers following his Nov. 1 recall from the Whale, where he was assigned to start the season after clearing waivers at the end of training camp.
