Report: Post-lockout life good to Bettman
Gary Bettman doesn't compare to his contemporaries when it comes to salary. But that doesn't mean post-lockout life has not been good to the NHL commissioner, according to a recent report.
Bettman made $7.5 million in the 2009-10 season, the SportsBusiness Journal reported, citing the NHL's most recent tax filing. That figure, while far below the salaries of MLB commissioner Bud Selig ($18.35 million) and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell ($10.9 million), according to the report, was a 4 percent increase over his 2008-09 season. It also marked the third consecutive raise for Bettman.
What's more, Bettman's salary has doubled since the 2004-05 lockout, when he was paid $3.7 million, according to the Journal. In that time, annual revenue generated by the NHL, NHL Enterprises and NHL teams has increased from $2.1 billion to $2.9 billion, the report stated.
The report also listed salaries of some of Bettman's top executives, including NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly (a little more than $2 million), senior vice president and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell ($1.5 million), and chief financial officer Craig Harnett and officiating manager Don Koharski ($1.1 million each).
