Report: NHL approves Sabres sale

Published Feb. 18, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

A person familiar with the vote tells The Associated Press the NHL board of governors has approved the sale of the Buffalo Sabres to Terry Pegula.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the NHL has not announced the results.

The NHL's approval clears the way for the Pennsylvania billionaire to close the $189 million deal with Tom Golisano next week.

The vote was conducted by fax over the past couple of days since the governors aren't scheduled to meet again until June. The sale already had the backing of the NHL's executive committee.
