Report: Jets' Kane benched because of dress-code violation
Winnipeg Jets left winger Evander Kane was a healthy scratch for Tuesday night's game because of ... sweat pants.
After Kane missed the game, there was plenty of speculation about the reason. But the Winnipeg Free Press reports Kane was disciplined for showing up to the rink wearing sweats -- instead of a suit -- for a midday team meeting. It marked the second time during his time with the team that Kane was a healthy scratch for disciplinary reasons.
What happens next, the newspaper opines, will go a long way in revealing whether there is a serious rift between the team and player. The Winnipeg Free Press notes Kane has been playing much of the season with an undisclosed injury that ultimately will require surgery. If Kane opts to shut it down and have surgery now, it will be evidence that the two sides in fact are at odds.
The newspaper also notes that Kane's salary also could be an issue for the Jets going forward. Kane signed a six-year, $31.5 million extension in September of 2012 that puts him under contract through the 2017-18 season.
In 37 games this season, Kane has 10 goals and 12 assists.
